Solved, My computer won't shut down

You own computer but won’t turn back on after being shut down, sleep. If you use the menu button to shut down, the screen goes blank but the light on the motherboard and system indicator on the case keeps on, also you hear the Power supply turn but still you get the same problem, your computer keeps blinking. Often the problem of incorrect shutdown might arise if you upgrade to windows but not necessary the problem it might. The only way you can shuts down your computer and turn off everything is through holding the physical power button down until it shut down. If your faces the similar problems hear you can do to solve the issue.
  • Check your power settings

You might ignore this option but remember everything with your computer depends on power, so make sure before anything you checked your power settings and have them set the way you want them to be set.


To perform power settings, go to the start menu hit cursor on search windows type settings then use single click to open settings. The windows settings will open; select Systems (Power, Display, Notification, apps). On your left tab scroll down select and tap Power & Sleep. Scroll down, under Related Settings click Additional Power Settings. All power settings you’re looking at will be prompted to you. If not fine just tweak the settings according to your wish. If all is fine, wait for some extra time before you shut down your computer. It might be busy due to tasks being performed especially if you use for long time.
  • Use third party freeware software utility

If the above option didn’t work for you try to use the third party utility freeware such as Glary Utilities. This utility will reveal to your all corrupted file or disk error that’s preventing your computer common shutdown.
  • Check background running program and uninstall third party antivirus program

Since, they are number of reason that could be preventing your windows 10 computer wont shutdown correctly as I explained some above but unfortunately the program running in the background also may cause this problem due to insufficient use of Random Access Memory (RAM) that make it to take longer time to shut down.

Third party antivirus program especially if you installed more than one Antivirus Program won’t let your windows 10 computer to run correctly because the antivirus tend to perform scheduled maintenance at every time you shut down your windows 10 computer, that might huge the problem. 


To check background running program press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open task manager, on the menu tap processes to check the running programs. Also you might disable programs running at every time you restart your computer. Press start-up, click on the program to enable or disable the program at start.
  • Run windows Update

The performance of your windows 10 PC depends on windows update, if you didn’t run windows update some functionality will be missing to your computer since Microsoft releases new update for windows. So to run windows update, hit the cursor on Search windows and type settings. Tap settings, single click on Update & Security. Check your left tab on your left hand side and tap windows update. Now update.
  • Use trouble-shooters to fix problem with windows update.


If the above options didn’t work for you, try to use the trouble-shooters to fix the problems with windows update, if there were issues they should be fixed and you will be able to see green circle with check mark after the issues being fixed. To run the trouble-shooters, hit the cursor on search windows, type control panel (desktop app) and click it.


Click system and Security, under security and Maintenance, click troubleshoot common computer problems. Under system and Security select fix problem with windows update, click next will start detecting problem and you will be given two options to select, tap on Troubleshoot as an administrator then click apply this fix. Hopefully the slow shut down problem will be resolved if not try the last option below.
  • Run System Maintenance

Run System Maintenance, which will find and clean up unused files and shortcuts while performing maintenance tasks. To run system maintenance, open control panel, Click system and Security, under security and Maintenance, clicks troubleshoot common computer problems. Under system and Security select Run maintenance tasks, press next.


Then click on Try troubleshooting as an administrator, will start checking for unnecessary files.
  • Reset your computer

If your computer isn’t running as the way you want, resetting it might help you to fix the issues. To reset your computer type settings on search windows, click on settings. 

Under windows settings type reset on finding a setting bar, then select reset This PC from the list. Now press get started.
  • Run msconfig command

This option will allows you to get deeper into your windows systems, if you’re not sure about seek help from expert otherwise you may progress, this will helps you to turn on all the services that are turned off. Repeat the process of enable/disable one by one for third party services until you duplicate the slow shutdown performance thus will identify the offending program and let you run your windows shutdown option very easy and faster. To run msconfig command. Type run on search windows (desktop app). On the pop up window type in msconfig. 


Then press ok. On the menu bar select services now disable or enable the running services.
